Eight Seconds. EIGHT. I Need A Drink.

Eight Seconds. EIGHT. I Need A Drink.

I've been staring at this incident report for twenty minutes and I still can't process it. Not because it's complicated. Because it's eight seconds.

Eight seconds from initial access to the SSH bastion. I've seen the Flock take longer than that to find the "any" key.

Here's what happened. Some wolf found a hole in the fence inside a Marimo notebook environment, which, yes, is a real thing that apparently lives in the Sky Pasture and apparently your developers thought was totally fine to expose. The attacker popped remote code execution, pivoted, and was knocking on the SSH bastion door before I could finish reading the alert subject line.

Sysdig caught this one and bless them for it, because the Shepherds certainly weren't looking up from their budget spreadsheets.

The part that's keeping me awake (well, MORE awake, I'm at hour thirty-one, who's counting) is that this wasn't even AI. This was a person. A skilled, caffeinated, deeply motivated human wolf who simply knew what they were doing. Everyone's been panicking about AI lowering the barrier to entry, and sure, fine, valid, whatever. But apparently a competent attacker with a good game plan still hits different.

Eight seconds is not a detection window. That's a sneeze. That's the time it takes one of the Lambs to accidentally reply-all to a phishing lure they definitely shouldn't have opened in the first place, Karen.

The pivot from the notebook to the bastion is the part that should make your eye twitch. That's lateral movement so fast it basically happened in the same breath as initial access. If your Electric Fence isn't segmenting notebook environments away from your critical infrastructure, you have a very bad afternoon coming.

Remediation

Look. I'm tired. So I'll keep this short.

Segment your Sky Pasture environments. Marimo notebooks, Jupyter, whatever your developers are running this week, should not have a clear path to your SSH bastion. Put the Electric Fence between them. Actually configure it this time.

Treat notebook environments like they're already compromised. Because statistically, given the Flock's track record, they probably are.

Get runtime detection in place. Eight seconds means your only hope is catching the behavior as it happens. Logs reviewed next Tuesday are not going to help you.

Apply the ointment. Patch Marimo. Patch it now. Yes, I know it'll break something. I don't care. Patch it.

Audit what's exposed in the Sky Pasture. If you don't know, ask someone who does. Not the Shepherds. They'll just schedule a meeting about it.

Logging off before I fall face-first into my keyboard again.
