Squidbleed Is 29 Years Old and Still Snitching on Your Flock and Bestie I Am DECEASED 💀🦑

Okay so I need everyone to put down their oat milk lattes RIGHT NOW because the internet has served us the most unhinged plate of drama and I simply cannot.

There is a bug. In Squid proxy. That is TWENTY NINE YEARS OLD. As in, this little gremlin was born in 1997, survived the Y2K panic, two decades of security conferences, and approximately one million "patch your stuff" blog posts (hi, it me), and it is STILL out here leaking your lambs' cleartext HTTP requests like it's handing out flyers at a farmers market. No cap. 🐑

The vibes are genuinely rancid.

Here's the tea: the flaw is a heap over-read, which means Squid is basically reading memory it was never invited to read. Cringe behavior. And because Squid is a proxy, any wolf already allowed to send traffic through the same proxy can just... receive another user's request. Credentials. Session tokens. The whole situationship. Exposed. To a stranger. In plaintext. In the year of our lord 2026.

The hole in the fence traces back to a 1997 FTP-parsing change. Someone wrote some code during the Spice Girls era and it has been quietly rotting in production ever since. The shepherds absolutely did not notice. Shocking. Truly.

Researchers at Calif.io dropped the disclosure in June and named it Squidbleed, which honestly? Iconic branding. Respect the craft. The part that is sending me though is that this is still live in Squid's DEFAULT configuration. Default! The flock never had a chance! 😭

I keep saying the Sky Pasture deserves better infrastructure hygiene and this is exactly why. Your proxy should not be a 29-year-old memory-leaking gossip queen, bestie.

🌿 Remediation (Slay Edition)

Okay here is what you actually do, no fluff:

  • Update Squid immediately. Apply the patch, do the shearing, dip the whole situation in ointment, whatever metaphor gets you moving. Just do it.
  • Audit your proxy traffic. If wolves were already allowed through your fence, assume they were reading the mail.
  • Review your default configs. "Default" is not a security posture, it is a cry for help.
  • Rotate credentials and session tokens for anything that touched this proxy. Yes, all of them. Yes, now.
  • Tell the shepherds. They will not understand but they need to sign the budget approval so.

This has been a threat report and also a personal tragedy.

Stay sheared out there, Grace out 🐑✌️
