When The Fence Catches The Wrong Sheep: The Ermakov Situation Is A Whole Mess

Oh good. Another Tuesday. Another geopolitical ransomware circus to read about while my coffee goes cold and my ticket queue hits triple digits.

So here's what happened. Armenia grabbed a Russian tourist named Aleksandr Ermakov at Yerevan's Zvartnots airport back on June 28th. Yanked him right out of the departure hall. Border officers reportedly held up a phone, showed him his own VKontakte photo like some kind of extremely low-budget spy thriller, and walked him into a side room.

The reason? The U.S. wants a guy named Aleksandr Ermakov for REvil ransomware activity. REvil, for the newer lambs in the flock, was one of the most prolific tick-infested operations in recent memory. These wolves caused billions in damage before various law enforcement agencies started actually doing their jobs for five minutes.

The problem, and I cannot stress enough how much this is a problem, is that his wife says they got the wrong sheep.

Same name. Different wolf. Allegedly.

His lawyers are claiming their guy is just a regular tourist who had the profound misfortune of sharing a name with an actual ransomware suspect. His wife Maria Yurova went on REN TV to explain the whole thing. The man has been sitting in a detention center since late June while everyone figures out whether they grabbed the right Aleksandr Ermakov or just a very unlucky one.

I want to feel bad. I genuinely do. But I also haven't slept properly since the last incident report and my empathy reserves are running at about 4%.

What I will say is this: if you share a name with a known wolf, maybe reconsider your travel itinerary. Just a thought. The Sky Pasture is watching. Airports are watching. Everyone is watching. Especially if your name is on a list somewhere.

The Shepherds at every level of this situation, U.S., Armenian, and otherwise, are doing their best impression of competent people while a man sits in a detention center waiting for someone to check a second piece of identifying information.

Look, I'm tired, but here's the bare minimum:

• If you are a REvil affiliate: Stop being that. Immediately.
• If you share a name with a known threat actor: Maybe update your travel risk assessment. And your will.
• If you are law enforcement: Biometrics exist. Use them. A VKontakte photo is not due diligence.
• If you are the Shepherds approving extradition requests: Read the whole document. All of it. Even the boring parts.

Someone go check if that man has the right tattoos at least.
